Zion National Park: choose your sector before your trail

Zion is more than the canyon in most photographs. The NPS separates Zion Canyon near Springdale from Kolob Canyons and Kolob Terrace, which require different approaches. Decide where you want to go before selecting a trailhead or parking plan. Our 2026 image shows sandstone beside the Canyon Overlook Trail; it says nothing about current road or trail conditions.

Reaching the main canyon

During shuttle season, the free Zion Canyon shuttle connects the visitor centre with stops in the canyon. Its dates, times and stops can change. The NPS says you do not need a reservation to enter Zion or ride the shuttle, but you do need to pay the entrance fee or hold a valid pass. Outside shuttle season, vehicle access arrangements differ. Check the live schedule before driving towards the canyon rather than relying on a past trip report.

Three choices that prevent a wrong itinerary

First, Kolob Canyons is not another stop on the Zion Canyon shuttle: plan its separate approach. Second, Angels Landing needs a permit for the regulated hike even though park entry needs no reservation. Third, an upstream Narrows hike starting at the Temple of Sinawava is not governed by every rule that applies to other canyoneering trips. Identify your exact route before deciding which permit, if any, applies. A park pass is not an activity permit.

Safety and cost for your date

Before entering a river corridor or narrow canyon, check current NPS conditions, alerts and weather; flash-flood risk can overturn a plan. Large vehicles face restrictions on the road towards the East Entrance. The official fees page distinguishes pass types and rules for non-US residents, so check the current charge for your party instead of assuming a single ticket price. Follow NPS directions for your selected entrance, not a pin at the park’s centre.
