Rocky Mountain National Park: choose an entrance before a route

Rocky Mountain National Park spreads across high country in Colorado. There is no single entrance for every itinerary: Estes Park serves the east side and Grand Lake the west. The Bear Lake photograph dates from 2021 and says nothing about current roads or trail conditions. Decide which side and activity matter before mapping a drive.

East, west and the seasonal road

The NPS gives different directions from Estes Park and Grand Lake. Trail Ridge Road links parts of the park when conditions allow, but it generally closes from mid-October through late May. Actual opening and closure dates depend on weather. Do not plan a November cross-park drive from a summer map. Check the NPS road status and approach the appropriate gateway. Navigation apps may suggest inaccurate routes within the park, so use the official park map and signs.

Entrance pass versus timed entry

A valid park entrance pass or fee is required year-round. During the seasonal reservation period, an additional timed-entry reservation may be needed at certain hours. The NPS offers two types: Timed Entry, which excludes Bear Lake Road, and Timed Entry+ Bear Lake Road. A reservation is not a substitute for paying the entrance fee. If Bear Lake is central to your visit, check that specific option and the dates for your season; rules from one year are not a promise for the next.

High-elevation walking needs a fresh check

Bear Lake and other mountain trails can be snowy or icy even when a lower road looks manageable. In its report updated 22 October 2026, the NPS warned that conditions could change during a hike and recommended checking weather and carrying suitable equipment. Three decisions define the trip: east or west gateway, Bear Lake Road or other areas, and scenic drive or a seasonally viable route. Review alerts, trail conditions, reservation windows and current fees on official pages shortly before departure; this guide does not claim a road is open today.
