Plitvice Lakes: choose an entrance and route before you book

The useful first choice. Plitvice Lakes National Park is not one mandatory circuit. The park distinguishes routes beginning at Entrance 1 from those beginning at Entrance 2, and the routes cover different parts of the lake system. Decide whether you want the Lower Lakes and Great Waterfall, the Upper Lakes, or a longer combination of both before fixing a ticket or transport plan.

A short route and a broad route are different trips

The official lake-tour programmes mark Entrance 1 routes in green and Entrance 2 routes in orange. Programme A starts at Entrance 1 and follows a 3.5 km circular route through the Lower Lakes area and Great Waterfall; the park gives 2–3 hours as guidance. Programme C also starts at Entrance 1, but combines Lower and Upper Lakes with walking, electric boats and a panoramic vehicle. At 8 km and an indicative 4–5 hours, it asks for a different amount of time and effort.

From Entrance 2, Programme E focuses on the Upper Lakes. The park gives 5.1 km and 2–3 hours, with a short boat crossing and panoramic-vehicle return. These figures help compare programmes, not promise your personal walking time. Check current route operation and weather before committing; a short tour does not automatically cover both the Upper and Lower Lakes.

Arriving and using internal transport

The park identifies two main entrance and reception areas. Parking is available at both for a fee, and bus stops are nearby. Its arrival guide and official map are more useful than navigating to the geographic centre of the park. Match your bus stop or car park to the entrance from which your chosen programme starts.

The park says visitors may use electric boats on Lake Kozjak and a panoramic vehicle with a valid entrance ticket. Which connection you actually use depends on the route. Check the official ticket price and availability for your visit date rather than relying on an old amount in a guide. Accessibility, trail closures and services need a current check too.

Questions worth asking

Do both entrances lead to the same walk? No. They are starting points for different colour-coded programmes and lake sequences.

Can I see both lake groups in two hours? Do not assume so: the routes covering both areas are longer than a short Lower- or Upper-Lakes programme.

Is the electric boat included? The park says it can be used with a valid entry ticket; check the chosen programme and current ticket conditions.
